Intercessory Missionary

An intercessory missionary is a person called to a lifestyle of prayer and fasting, and divinely set on the a wall of intercession (Isaiah 62:6-7).

Their service is first and primarily ministering to the Lord in night and day prayer.

An early example is Anna, a woman who prayed night and day in the temple with fasting for more than sixty years just before the first coming of Jesus. (Luke 2:36-38)

This “Anna” calling and grace transcends gender and age. Men and women, young and old are being called to live the intercessory missionary lifestyle.

Why Pray?

E.B. Bounds wrote, “God does nothing except by prayer.”

Prayer is central to the work of an intercessory missionary.

Prayer is simply telling God what He tells you to tell Him. Prayer brings us into agreement with what is in God’s heart. Intercession and worship is the means that God has chosen to establish His kingdom on the earth. (Matthew 6:10)

As we pray, we cooperate with God to establish His higher purposes on earth.

Not By Power or Might

Jesus said His kingdom would not be established by human power, might or wisdom, but by the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:27)

He has chosen the seemingly foolish response of prayer and worship to bring about His purposes on earth. And He invites us to be part of it. Just as prayer changes us as individuals, prayer can change the spiritual climate over a city and nation. (Psalm 149)

Prayer and Missions

Traditionally we think of missions work as the “active” expression of the Great Commission. Prayer is often seen as more passive. Prayer and missions are two sides of the same coin. Now God is bringing both expressions together to fulfill his purposes. As we go into all the earth in prayer and fasting, God goes with us bringing salvation, healing, justice and redemption.

Night and Day Prayer

“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, And give Him no rest till He establishes And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7

Throughout history, God has divinely established places of Night and Day Prayer.

Jesus exhorts us to cry out in prayer day and night. (Luke 18:1-8)

King David, in ancient Israel, organized prophetic singers and musicians to lead corporate worship and intercession 24 hours a day in Jerusalem.

Christians gathered in Germany for the “watch of the Lord,” a prayer meeting that continued 24 hours a day for 120 years birthing the first Protestant missions movement.

3000 monks gather in Ireland in 555 A.D. to being a prayer meeting that continuing with singing 24 hours a day for 300 years.

David Cho, a South Korean pastor, established Prayer Mountain with night and day prayer attracting more than a million visitors per year.

Throughout Africa, believers gather in 24/7 prayer.

And here in America, the International House of Prayer in Kansas City established a 24/7 prayer center in September of 1999.

Supporting Scripture

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:9-13
